MAVKA: A Night to Celebrate Ukrainian Culture

On 31 July, something truly special happened in Ealing. Together with EHCVS and Ealing Council, we invited our community to Picturehouse Cinema for an evening filled with Ukrainian culture, art, and connection.

Guests were welcomed by the sound of live Ukrainian music and the smell of traditional food prepared by Ukrainian chefs. The walls were decorated with artwork created by Ukrainian children living in Ealing, each picture a reminder of resilience, creativity, and hope.

The highlight of the evening was the screening of MAVKA: The Forest Song, an animated film that speaks to the heart of Ukrainian folklore, resilience, and love for nature. With English subtitles, it opened a window into Ukrainian storytelling for both local residents and our wider community.

Over 150 people joined us that night, supported by 20 amazing volunteers who welcomed guests, translated, coordinated, and made sure everything ran smoothly. For many, it was not just a film screening but a celebration – a chance to feel proud, to share culture, and to see Ukraine recognised and respected in their new home.

We are especially proud of our volunteers, who gained real experience in event coordination, PR, and translation while giving their time and energy to make the event possible.

It was an evening full of smiles, conversations, and a sense of belonging. As one guest said afterwards:

It felt like home. Ukrainian food, music, and stories in the heart of Ealing – a reminder that our culture is alive and respected here.
